CRJ 4999 - INTERNSHIP IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE


credits: 3.0
This course is a credit variable course, can be taken for 3 OR 6 credits. Will be graded on S-D-F basis. This career-related internship course is for students interested in working in any field related to criminal justice (i.e. police, courts, corrections, juvenile justice, the law, etc.). The internship may include working with: police departments; courts; private law firms engaged in criminal defense practice; prosecutor’s offices; public defender’s offices, jails/prisons; community-based corrections; reentry programs; juvenile or adult diversionary programs; or anything similarly related to a career in criminal justice. Students considering this course should note: (1) all students are required to obtain the internship on their own or with the assistance of Career Services prior to the start of the term; (2) all internships are required to take place at an off-campus location; (3) all internships must be approved by the faculty sponsor prior to the start of the term; (4) students will contract additional course requirements for the internship with the sponsoring faculty member; and (5) the approved career-related internship may be taken for 3 credits (120 hours) or for 6 credits (240 hours). Objectives: A) Students will successfully apply disciplinary knowledge in a setting appropriate to the field of criminal justice; B) Students and sponsoring faculty members will develop at least one additional course-specific learning outcome for the internship. The student will be evaluated by the faculty member on the basis of the learning outcomes. Method of Instruction: Independent learning via a career-related internship. Method of Evaluation: Final grades will use the S-D-F grading scheme. “S” will be assigned to approved career-related internships meeting the required hours and satisfactory completion of the final learning product as agreed upon by the student and the faculty member. The faculty member will assess the final learning product. No student may pass the career-related internship without completing the minimum number of hours for a 3 credit or 6 credit internship. “D” will be assigned to internships meeting the required hours and less than satisfactory completion of the final product. “F” will be assigned for internships wherein the hours have not been met or a final product is not submitted. Meets FEX-Career Related Internship Requirements.

Prerequisite(s): Junior or Senior standing; Completed >15hrs of coursework in the Criminal Justice major, and Faculty Member Approval. Also need to complete a contract with the Office of Career Services, before registering for course.
