CHE 3042 - BIOCHEMISTRY I

For BIO 3042 -CHE 3042, the “WRT” Distribution Requirement is filled when students complete the Lab portion. This course covers the identity, nomenclature, structure, and function of biomolecules. A particular focus is on proteins and their functions, especially those that are enzymes. It is designed for chemistry, biochemistry, or biology majors. Students will also learn about common techniques used to separate, identify, and work with biomolecules. This course will prepare students for the second semester Biochemistry II course as well as further education in biochemical topics. Objectives: A) Classify and identify the four main types of biological macromolecules; B) Explain the functions of biological macromolecules; C) Analyze the specific mechanisms of certain example enzymes and signaling molecules; D) Employ basic mathematical concepts to solve biochemical problems. Method of Instruction: Lecture with active problem solving. Method of Evaluation: Grading for this course will be based on quizzes (20%), participation (10%), and exams (70%).

Prerequisite(s): CHE 2010 ORGANIC CHEMISTRY I  
Co-Requisite(s): MUST BE TAKEN WITH A BIO 3042L  OR CHE 3042L  LAB.
