ANT 3260 - QUALITATIVE METHODS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: SOC 3260 ANT-SOC 3260 Full title: QUALITATIVE METHODS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE. This course introduces the qualitative methods used in social science research, with particular emphasis on ethnography and participant-observation. Students will study the underlying theoretical assumptions of qualitative methods and will design, undertake and write up a brief ethnographic study based on their own research. Objectives: A) Identify and explain different qualitative methodologies; B) Know the appropriate methods to use in different research contexts; C) Have hands-on practice using different methodologies; D) Design and conduct a qualitative study; E) Analyze and write up the results of a qualitative study. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion; readings, and field based research. Method of Evaluation: Course presentations on class materials as directed (15%) and successful completion of field project: research design (10%), field journal (25%), course participation and discussion about field experience (15%), research paper based on field experience (35%). Meets *WRT General Degree Requirement.
