THE 3050 - STAGE MOVEMENT


credits: 3.0
This course presents a survey of movement employed in the theatre. It is, by nature, physical and employs daily hands-on activity. Course content includes physical warm-ups (to assure personal safety), physical characterization, basic mime techniques, movement to music, and an introduction to stage combat. Objectives: A) Prepare for physical actions required in performance; B) Discuss, create, and execute basic physical characterizations; C) Discuss, create, and perform rudimentary mime scenes; D) Relate physicalization to music; E) Discuss, create, and perform safely stage combat scenes; F) Critique movement in theatrical settings. Method of Instruction: A) Application of physicalization in Shadowing exercise (mime unit); B) Hands-on practice and application of methods; C) Group activity in performance creation and execution. Method of Evaluation: Four major projects related to units of study: 1) Mime (approx. 20% of grade); 2) Music (approx. 10% of grade); 3a) unarmed combat (approx. 10% of grade); 3b) armed combat (approx. 10% of grade); 4) Final hands-on project (approx. 20% of grade); a) final paper (incorporating text assignments) (approx. 10% of grade); b) shadowing exercise (approx. 5% of grade); and c) participation (attend., lead text discussions, etc.) (approx. 15% of grade). While rubrics emphasizing technique and safety will be provided for all graded assignments, all evaluation will have to be somewhat subjective. Meets *PEW Distribution Requirement.
