THE 3010 - THEATRE HISTORY I credits: 3.0 A study of the development of theatre in the Western world from its beginning through the Renaissance. As theatre and drama exist within a larger world, the intent of the course is to acquaint students with the variety and development of both theatre forms and dramatic literature in historical, cultural, and social contexts. Objectives: A) Describe the evolution of theatre as an art form from the earliest known form to 1700; B) Compare and contrast different historic forms of theatre, theory, literature, and other related aspects of drama; C) Examine and interpret elements of theatrical production during different historical periods; D) Evaluate dramatic theory and dramatic literature in the cultural context of the time it was written and the present day; E) Write effective research/personal response papers related to theatre history. Method of Instruction: Lectures and discussions. Method of Evaluation: Two exams that must be taken in class, group performance and presentation project, dramaturgy paper, and short response papers. Meets *WEP and *WRT Distribution Requirements.
