HIS 1401 - UNITED STATES HISTORY II - 1865 TOPRESENT credits: 3.0 An introductory survey of the major economic, political, social, and cultural developments in the United States from 1865 to contemporary times. The following topics will receive particular attention: the development of an industrial economy; major political reform movements such as Progressivism and the New Deal; the development of a multi-ethnic and multi-racial society; foreign affairs and global conflict. Objectives: A) To introduce students to the major issues and topics that have shaped American history from 1865 to present; B) To develop students’ analytical abilities, especially through written assignments and critical readings of required texts. Method of Instruction: Mixture of lectures and student discussion. Method of Evaluation: Grades will be determined by a student’s performance on the following: two essays based on assigned readings, two or three exams, class participation and occasional quizzes. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
