FAR 2900 - MUSICAL COMEDY credits: 3.0 This course is a credit variable course for 3.0 credits OR 6.0 credits. The descriptions are broken down to specific topics, see submissions to separate out by topic and credits. To understand and participate in process of staging a musical. Method of Instruction: Intensive participation in all aspects of the production will be expected. That is, persons with acting/ singing roles will be required to take part in other aspects of the production (ie., sets, properties, costumes, etc.) Prior to registration, interested students should contact Professor Kelly in order to draw up a contract which will include the amount and type of work expected and the credits to be earned. Acting and singing roles will be determined by audition. Scenery- The construction, rigging, and preparation of scenery for a production. Lighting and Sound- The hanging, focusing, and preparing of lighting & sound equipment for a production. Properties- The construction, procurement and preparation of furniture, set-trimming, and other physical part that the performers handle for a production. Set Decoration- The painting and decorating of scenery, properties, draperies and drops as required by a production. Costumes and Makeup- The construction, procurement and preparation of costumes, wigs and makeup. In general anything that is worn by a performer during a production. Running Crew- The backstage performance during a show, associated with one of the following areas- Scenery, Lighting and Sound, Properties, or Costumes and Makeup. Students participate in rehearsals and performance. Acting/Vocal- By audition only. Permission of instructor is required. Open auditions will be held prior to registration for term III each year. Students must compete in an audition process to be considered for a part. If cast, students participate in rehearsals and performance. Orchestra- By audition or assignment of musical director only. This section includes Stage Manager, Assistant Stage Manager, Assistant to the Director, Assistant to the Musical Director, Assistant to the Choreographer, Assistant Set Designer, Assistant Lighting Designer, Assistant Costume Designer, Assistant Technical Director. Students participate in rehearsals and performance. Theatre Business/Publicity/House Management/ Box Office- Any work that relates to publicizing a production and the direct relationship with the audience. This can include but is not limited to painting and decorating of posters and bulletin boards, hanging and distributing posters on and off campus, contacting local TV, Radio and other news services, etc., and selling of tickets or concessions, ushering and all activities which deal with providing a comfortable, pleasant and safe visit for the audience. Method of Evaluation: A minimum completion of sixty contact hours must be completed for a passing grade in this course. Factors such as attitude, willingness to contribute to the class and extenuating circumstances may result in the raising or lowering of any grade one letter at the discretion of the instructor. NOTE: For MUSICAL COMEDY: TECHNICAL BASICS: A minimum completion of sixty contact hours and a role working backstage for the production must be completed for a passing grade in this course. Factors such as attitude, willingness to contribute to the class and extenuating circumstances may result in the raising or lowering of any grade one letter at the discretion of the instructor.
