ART 1959 - GREECE AND ROME: HISTORY AND ART credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: HIS 1959 ART 1959-HIS 1959 CO-REQUISITE Courses. Will introduce students to the ancient and modern cultures of Greece and Rome. Will spend a week in the classroom studying the ancient history and cultures of Rome and Greece followed by a three-week tour of Rome, one-week, and Greece, two-weeks. Highlights include various monuments and museums in Rome, Athens, Mycenae, Delphi, Olympia, and the island of Crete. While travelling the students will also experience the culture of Italy and Greece today. Will provide students with unique opportunity to gain first-hand experience of the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome which laid the foundation of Western Europe through archaeological and historical sites. Students will be exposed to the political, cultural and religious monuments of Rome and Greece. Will also be immersed in the atmosphere of Italy and Greece and will gain lasting impressions of its history, cultures, and religions. Objectives: A) Identify the pivotal historical developments in Greek and Roman civilizations; B) Describe and explain the chief components, religious, economic, political, etc., of the cultures of Rome and Greece; C) Identify the major developments in art and architecture in Greek and Roman civilizations. Method of Instruction: Classroom and Travel for 15-21 days. The week in the classroom, professor will be lecturing on a general overview of Greek and Roman history and art, important dates and events and places, which students will be visiting. This is so that the students will have a background before seeing the actual monuments. Method of Evaluation: Journal: 50%, Research paper-presentation: 40%, and Quizzes: 10%. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement. TRAVEL COURSE, FEES ASSOCIATED.
