ART 1900 - RAKU CERAMICS


credits: 6.0
Students will explore Raku, an ancient Japanese ceramic art form that evolved in conjunction with the tea ceremony. Students will learn traditional and contemporary methods for making raku objects, both utilitarian and non-functional. The course will offer both a historical and a philosophical frame of reference as well as direct experience with raku materials and techniques. Students will learn clay preparation, glaze development, surface treatment, and kiln construction as it specifically applies to raku ceramics. Objectives: A) Demonstrate various hand building techniques used in ceramics such as pinch, coil, and slab construction; B) Demonstrate basic wheel throwing techniques; C) Identify different types of firing processes used in ceramics; D) Discuss the important formal and conceptual aspect of a work of art; E) Analyze and examine how art is made; F) Recognize and interpret the unique process, intent, and meanings of the art produced by themselves and their peers; G) Discuss traditional Japanese Wabi-sabi aesthetics. Method of Instruction: Class time will consist of demonstrations, lectures with work time, firings and other activities. Time working outside of class (homework and research) will be required. Group and individual instruction will occur with frequent critiques. There will be demonstrations throughout the semester. Method of Evaluation: Percentage of final grade: The assignments will require a written response following the formal critique of the work. Assignments 60%, Research Paper 15%, Glaze Research 15%, and Class Participation 10%. Course Fee: $75.00.
