ANT 3260 - QUALITATIVE METHODS IN SOCIAL SCIENCE

ANT 3260-SOC 3260 . This course introduces the qualitative methods used in social science research, with particular emphasis on ethnography and participant-observation. Students will study the underlying theoretical assumptions of qualitative methods and will design, undertake and write up a brief ethnographic study based on their own research. Objectives: To acquaint students with the design, methods and ethical problems of qualitative field research through practice. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion; readings, occasional videos and films, and field based research. Method of Evaluation: Course presentations on class materials as directed (15%) and successful completion of field project: research design (10%), field journal (25%), course participation and discussion about field experience (15%), research paper based on field experience (35%). Meets *WRT General Degree Requirement.

Prerequisite(s): ANT 3150 - SOCIAL THEORY  (or) SOC 3150 - SOCIAL THEORY
