ANT 3040 - THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF GENDER

ANT 3040-WMS 3040 . Examines the ways that different cultures define “gender” and create the rules by which men and women should behave. Case studies and ethnographic works are used to introduce students to the variety of ways that different cultures organize gender and define appropriate related behavior. Cultural areas examined may include, but are not limited to, Africa, Egypt, India, Japan and Mexico. Objectives: To acquaint students with the range of diversity of gender systems and to contribute to their understanding of how culture and society shape and define what is considered appropriately “male” and “female”. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion, group exercises, videos and films. Method of Evaluation: Three essay exams (10% each), oral history field project (10%) and course participation (10%). Meets *NWP Distribution Requirement.
