AMS 3025-ENG 3025 -HIS 3025 . From the Puritan’s errand into the wilderness through the establishment of the National Parks, something called nature has been identified as a central component of America’s national identity. Will explore the ways in which ideas about nature have been reflected in American literature and art and how those ideas have shaped American political and social practices; read Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax as a prelude to considering the major writers, painters, and photographers in the nature tradition; make virtual visits to Niagara Falls, Central Park, and several National Parks; wrestle with the deeply ambivalent and complex place nature has held in the American imagination. Objectives: A) Identify and analyze the major literary, philosophical, and artistic reflections on the meaning of nature in the United States; B) Describe the way in which ideas about nature have shaped ideas about American identity; C) Describe the way in which ideas about nature have influenced political, cultural, and social practices; D) Analyze and interpret a variety of historical and cultural texts; E) Communicate effectively in writing and discussion. Method of Instruction: Guided discussion. Method of Evaluation: Mid-term, final, and two-three papers. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.
