MGT 5025 - Business Ethics


credits: 3.0
This course provides an introduction to ethical decision making and the role of business in society. It examines the origins, justifications and applications of morality in the marketplace by reviewing actual cases, analyzing the results and formulating solutions to the problems encountered. Objectives: A) Increase awareness of the importance of ethical values for individual and organizational effectiveness; B) Define the multiple stakeholders with interests in business decisions and the often conflicting interests; C) Develop a process for thinking through the economic and non-economic implications of strategies and implementation plans in realistic business situations; D) Apply ethical reasoning when analyzing ethical problems and dilemmas in the workplace;  E) Describe four avenues of ethical reasoning; F) Articulate what may be entailed in addressing ethical issues within the context of general management tasks; G) Recognize the dimensions that play an essential role in promoting morally responsible business behavior; H) Discern the importance of good decision-making and accountability; I) Define what it means to manage corporate culture; J) Recognize ethical dilemmas; K) Demonstrate effective communication skills. Method of Instruction: Will be primarily in the seminar mode. A seminar mode implies lecture will be kept to a minimum. Students will be required to analyze cases by researching the background and history of the problem, identifying relevant issues, and formulating appropriate responses to the issues.  Students will be required to present these case studies to the class using a Power Point format. Students will complete book reviews and a term paper on a relevant topic. Method of Evaluation: Will be using a letter grade system to explain the weighting of course components: 1) Case preparations, presentations and executive summaries 40%; 2) Term paper and presentation 30%; 3) Class Discussion and participation 15%; 4) There’s No Such Thing as Business Ethics 15%.

Prerequisite(s): In the Masters of Management program.
