RDG 5400 - Graduate Literacy Practicum I Early Childhood And Childhood Ed


credits: 3.0
Is designed to enable students enrolled in the MSE: Literacy Birth through Grade 12 to work within an educational setting and gain experience in performing professional duties associated with the role of literacy specialist or reading coach. Practicum activities are supervised at a preschool-elementary school site by certified teachers-literacy specialists. Practicum experiences include administering literacy assessments, analyzing assessment data, facilitating reading and writing intervention activities, and working with individual students, small groups, or classes. Will demonstrate the ability to work in a professional capacity with both students, adults in an educational setting, and families as partners in literacy learning. Objectives: A) Administer and analyze a variety of assessments to determine the strengths of literacy learners at the early childhood and childhood education levels and identify areas for improvement; B) Develop and administer plans of intervention using research-based strategies; C) Evaluate progress of students receiving interventions and make data based instructional decisions; D) Provide reading instruction to individuals, small groups of learners, and classes in an early childhood and childhood setting; and Collaborate with adults in an education setting to make instructional decisions for literacy learners; E) Create a case study report suitable for parents, teachers, and administrators of an individual student receiving intervention lessons. Method of Instruction: Field based course: readings; online mediated discussions and regularly scheduled meetings through the term with college supervisor-professor. Method of Evaluation: Rubric based assessment of performance in field activities.
