RDG 5200 - Literacy And Performance credits: 3.0 Will address the relationship between the acquisition of literacy and performance. Also will examine the history of conveying the meaning of text via kinetic, lyric, and visual means from cave paintings though the New Literacies. Students will learn how performance of a text can impact an individual’s relationship to literacy. Cross media means, e.g. transformation of a book into a screenplay, poetry into Readers Theater, text into interpretive dance will be investigated. Students will have an opportunity to transform literacy into performance and design activities that promote literacy through performance. Objectives: A) Describe historical implications of literacy as performance; B) Identify means and forms of the reciprocal relationship between performance and literacy; C) Describe various forms of literacy including the New Literacies; D) Design a learning activity or learning activities that demonstrate an understanding of the educational benefits of performance in the K-12 classroom by utilizing performance as a means to enhancing literacy. Method of Instruction: Lecture, Discussion, and Online resources. Method of Evaluation: Response to Readings, Quizzes: Outcomes, Research Paper, Transformation Project, and Literacy Performance.
