HIS 5260 - Amerca & Vietnm-‘45-‘75

credits: 0.0
A study of America’s most complex and morally ambiguous war, this course will begin with President Truman’s decision in 1945 to reverse Washington’s earlier support of Ho Chi Minh. Lecture and discussion will relate to the meaning of initial American aid, the fate of the French, and the reaction of the Eisenhower Administration. The escalation of tehimportance of Vietnam by President Kennedy will be examined and President Johnson’s attempt at a military solution will be analyzed. Finally, there will be an assessment of President Nixon’s policy of “Vietnamization,” the Paris Peace Accords of 1973, and the collapse of South Vietnam in the spring of 1975. In viewing the policies of five administrations, significant questions will be raised: Was Vietnam a quagmire or was it the result of a series of calculated decision? Was the American effort a “noble crusade” or a tragic miscalculation? Why did the Communists win? What were the lessons of the war?
