EDU 5645 - Theory To Practice: Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages.

This is an on-line course.This course examines theories of language acquisition and their manifestation in best practices for teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Candidates will explore historical and social contexts for the development of second language acquisition theory and practice. Objectives: A) Describe the theoretical shift from the structuralist approach to the Monitor Theory of Stephen Krashen in second language acquisition; B) Discuss the five hypotheses of Krashen’s Theory of Second Language Acquisition and implications for second language instruction; C) Explain Chomsky’s Universal Grammar theory and implications for TESOL instruction; D) Analyze historical and sociological contexts for practices associated with K-12 TESOL instruction; E) Describe different models of TESOL instruction implemented in K-12 schools across the U. S.; F) Evaluate current research in TESOL education. Method of Instruction: This is an online course, will include synchronous and asynchronous discussions; videotaped lectures by the professor; group project-based learning tasks; and online presentations by students. Method of Evaluation: One Exam/Theoretical Underpinnings of TESOL (LO1, LO2, (LO3); Online Presentation of a TESOL instructional model (LO5); Paper and Discussion Facilitation of current research in TESOL (LO6); Discussion Facilitation of historical and/or sociological event impacting TESOL instruction (LO4); Book Review of contemporary narratives of English language learners.
