EDU 5600 - Methodologies For Teaching English To Speakers Of Other Languages (TESOL) .


credits: 3.0
Will examine effective approaches to teaching English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Candidates will examine the role of the teacher and the learner; effective language experiences; techniques and methodologies used to teach language in various contexts and developmental groups. Objectives: A) Describe the five stages of second language acquisition; B) Discuss key components of task-based approaches to the teaching of English to speakers of other languages; C) Construct language learning tasks for teaching English; D) Design an effective learning environment for English language learners; E) Differentiate instruction based on the respective needs of diverse English language learners; F) Demonstrate connections between classroom learning tasks and the real world. Method of Instruction: Will be taught in a hybrid or online format with videotaped or in-class lectures by the instructor; synchronous discussions supported by technology (i.e. Zoom or other platform) or in-class discussions; Readings and responses to readings; and videotaped (or in-class) lesson demonstrations. Method of Evaluation: Two Exams; Two Demonstration Lessons; Paper and Presentation: effective learning environments for English Language Learners. The final grade for the course will be determined by the total number of points earned divided by the total number of points possible.
