EDU 5505 - Autism Spectrum Disorder:Perspectives For Educators


credits: 3.0
This course provides students with an understanding of current, research-based strategies to support children with autism spectrum disorders. Topics include historical perspectives, theories, diagnosis, assessment, programming, transitions into adulthood and principles of Universal Design for Learning. Research-based interventions to support the development of cognitive, communicative, and social skills, as well as behavioral competencies will be addressed. Objectives: A) Identify and analyze the characteristics and behaviors associated with autism; B) Critically analyze and synthesize current theories and research on autism spectrum disorders; C) Examine the diagnostic criteria and methods of assessment used for identifying autism; D) Analyze evidenced-based interventions for students with autism spectrum disorders; E) Examine and discuss programming that supports the behavioral, social, communicative, and cultural needs of students with autism; F) Analyze the principles of Universal Design for Learning and explain how to apply these principles to support students with autism spectrum disorders in the general education classroom; G) Identify, examine, and be able to apply intervention approaches, behavioral programming, and other therapeutic methods available for children, teenagers, and adults with autism. Method of Instruction: The course includes weekly readings, discussion of readings and associated topics, website resource reviews, and projects. PowerPoint slides that highlight select content from each week’s assigned readings and handouts that reinforce key concepts will be posted on the course management system. Method of Evaluation: Point values will be assigned to exams and assignments. Letter grades will subsequently be assigned on the basis of overall class performance.
