EDU 5335 - Assessment For Student Learning In Special Education


credits: 3.0
This is an On-Line Masters Level Course.This course examines the functions and uses of assessment in all special education environments, including assessment for instructional decision-making, IEPs and 504 plans, and the use of assessment to systematically address students’ behavior needs. Methods of instructional and behavior assessments will be reviewed and will include assessment methods, evaluation, and targeted and ongoing feedback to students. Students will design standards-based assessments, as well as review and analyze assessment data for a variety of purposes including framing learning and/or behavior goals, progress monitoring and student self-assessment. Objectives: A) Examine legal provisions in current federal and state regulations and guidelines regarding assessment; B) Apply knowledge of basic assessment concepts including testing and test construction; C) Create assessment criteria based on grade-level curricular standards; D) Develop a range of assessments, including pre-assessments, formative and summative assessments; E) Interpret assessment data to identify students’ learning gaps and provide goals to support progressive action plans for students; F) Analyze alternative and adaptive assessment approaches for students with disabilities; G) Develop a portion of an individualized education plan, including present levels of academic achievement and functional performance and academic and behavioral goals. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, and practical application projects to link content discussed to real-life implementation. Method of Evaluation: Creating Curriculum-Based Assessments (Practical Application 2) 20%; Evaluating Data to Target Instruction (Practical Application 3) 15%; Creating a Developmental Continuum (Practical Application 4) 10%; Using Assessment Data to Write PLEPS and IEP Goals (Practical Application 5) 15%; Creating a Functional Behavior Assessment (Practical Application 6) 10%; Creating a Behavior Intervention Plan (Practical Application 7) 5%; and Final Case Study Reflection 15%.
