EDU 5330 - Instructional Design For The Inclusive Classroom credits: 3.0 Examines the roles of inclusive-special education teachers in planning curriculum and instruction for academically diverse students in an inclusive K-12 setting. A particular focus is on differentiation of the curriculum to ensure that all students with/without disabilities learn at their highest potential. Historical and legislative milestones for educating individuals with disabilities are explored along with current theory and practice in developing an inclusive setting for K-12 students. Objectives: A) Identify and describe the historical and legislative milestones, legal basis, and current issues in educational programs for students with disabilities; B) Explain critical approaches to disability (and normalcy) as socially, historically, and politically constructed; C) Explain the current educational and social definitions of individuals with learning disabilities; D) Evaluate current policies and practice in identifying students with learning disabilities through formal and information assessment and Response to Intervention models; E) Apply various models of differentiated instruction for students with disabilities including Universal Design for Learning and curricular adaptation; F) Describe effective practice in developing an inclusive setting for diverse learners in a K-12 setting. Method of Instruction: Lecture, readings, and discussion. Method of Evaluation: Exams, research paper, and presentation.
