EDU 5005 - Education In A Democratic Pluralistic Society

Designed to help students understand and analyze the complex historical, social, cultural, political, and economic factors impacting education in the United States. Within this analytical framework, students will identify and critically analyze important issues, challenges, and policies that significantly shape American public education in a democratic pluralistic society. Objectives: A) Critically analyze historical goals of American education; B) Examine the philosophical underpinnings of American education; C) Evaluate the role of economic and political factors that have influenced education policy; D) Analyze social and cultural factors that impact American education; E) Investigate the various roles of stakeholders in American education; the rights and responsibilities of teachers, professional staff, students, parents, community members, school administrators; and the importance of developing productive relationships to enhance student learning. Method of Instruction: Lectures, Discussions, and Readings. Method of Evaluation: Examination 100 points; Two essays, one focusing on the philosophical underpinning of education and one focusing on the impact of economic-political factors influencing education policy 200 points; Research paper and presentation that regarding issues, challenges, policies that shape education 100 points, total points = 400. The final grade for the course will be determined by the total number of points earned divided by the total number of points possible.
