The M.S.Ed in General Education consists of three different tracks:

Track 1: This track is for candidates who are not seeking certification and do not wish to teach in a K-12 classroom in the State of New York. It is intended to provide an individually defined sequence of advanced study in the broad discipline of education. Under this program, students have flexibility of designing a program of study suited to their individual needs.

Track 2: This track is for candidates who already hold a bachelor’s degree and are now seeking their Initial Teaching Certificate in the State of New York. To qualify for this program, candidates must already possess a bachelor’s degree in a content core as defined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). The content core must include 30 credit hours in an area that NYSED considers to be a core subject taught in K-12 curriculum (Social Studies/History, English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physical Education, Spanish, Business/Marketing, etc.).

Upon graduation, candidates in this program will need to seek certification through the individual evaluation pathway at NYSED. This program does not lead to institutional recommendation. However, this track will provide candidates with courses to fulfill the pedagogical core in the grade level band of the certificate sought. Coursework will include courses related to Human Development and Learning, Teaching Students with Disabilities, Teaching Literacy, Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment and Foundations of Education. Coursework will also include a fulltime student teaching experience within the subject area and grade level of the certificate being sought.

Students in this program will need to complete a series of seven Student Teaching Workshops as required by the State of New York. They will also need to pass the Educating All Students (EAS) and Content Specialty Test (CST) in their content area before applying for certification.

Track 3: This track is for candidates who already hold a NYS Initial Teaching Certificate and are seeking Professional Certification in the State of New York. It is intended to provide a core of advanced study in the candidate’s content core area as defined by the New York State Education Department (NYSED). The content core must be in an area that NYSED considers a core subject taught in K-12 curriculum (Social Studies/History, English, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, Physical Education, Spanish, Business/Marketing, etc.).

Upon graduation, candidates in this program will need to seek certification through the individual evaluation pathway at NYSED. This program does not lead to institutional recommendation.

In addition to the 21 hours of courses in the pedagogical core (Human Development and Learning, Teaching Students with Disabilities, Teaching Literacy, Curriculum, Instruction, Assessment and Foundations of Education), coursework must include 12 credit hours in graduate coursework within the content core area. Coursework must also include Student Teaching unless the candidate is already employed full-time in the subject area and grade level of the certificate sought. In which case, their student teaching experience would be waived.
