ECO 3080 - SPORTS ECONOMICS

ECO 3080-SPM 3080 . Apply economic theory to study markets of professional and intercollegiate athletics. Demand for, cost of, sports both individual and team. Analyze sports labor markets and labor relations. Consider public finance of sports facilities. Oligopoly and monopoly theory of sports institutions. Objectives: A) Apply demand theories to both professional and amateur sporting events, both ongoing and onetime and analyze and assess the demand for both professional and amateur sports Professionals, including coaching staffs: B) Apply theories of the firm and theories of governmental regulation to sports organizations such as sports Leagues, Associations, and the NCAA; C) Identify and evaluate the existence of discrimination in sports; D) Assess the economic importance of sports at all levels and the employment opportunities available in primary, secondary and tertiary sports markets. Method of Instruction: Will utilize lectures, class discussion and assigned readings from professional economics journals. Method of Evaluation: Determined by a combination of two exams (15% each), homework assignments applying economic theory to specific sports venues (25%), classroom presentations (10% each) and an end-of-term paper on a topic of the student’s choice (25%).

Prerequisite(s): ECO 2010 - PRINCIPLES OF MICROECONOMICS  and ECO 2020 - PRINCIPLES OF MACROECONOMICS
