EDU 5208 - EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY FOR CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS

This three-credit hour graduate course surveys contemporary issues in educational psychology. Investigates learning and developmental theories with a focus on authentic application to practice. Students will engage in several learning activities designed to build their repertoire of skills related to meeting diverse student needs, and addressing common issues in education, such as motivation and critical thinking. Students will evaluate classroom management practices with regard to identity development and will create assessment and teaching philosophies from a theory to practice lens. The course consists of weekly activities designed to allow students to apply their developing understanding of course concepts in the form of papers, discussions, presentations, a group project, and quizzes. Objectives: A) Describe theories of development across cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas to meet the needs of students at various developmental levels; B) Evaluate the influence of a students’ developmental characteristics on their learning to inform instructional decisions; C) Recommend instructional strategies that will positively impact student learning using evidence-and research-based practices; D) Use your skills as a reflective practitioner to evaluate classroom practices to determine how various theories of child and adolescent psychology, learning, and development are applied in authentic classroom situations; E) Analyze learning theories to develop your personal/professional philosophy of education.

Prerequisite(s): Admission to the MSE program (Adolescence or General Education).
