EDU 5405 - Student Teaching in Special Education (K-6 & 7-12) credits: 9.0 Student Teaching is the capstone course for graduate level students seeking teaching certification in the state of New York. During this course, students enrolled in the M.S.Ed. Special Education program will demonstrate their teaching knowledge, dispositions, and performances as they assume a substantial instructional load and are given the responsibility to design, implement, and assess a wide range of learning experiences that are aligned with New York State Learning Standards. Candidates are placed in schools where they have the opportunity to work with diverse populations with varying developmental levels and identified special needs in two grade bands: K-6 and 7-12. Additionally, candidates attend seminars and workshops at Elmira College to discuss topics such as classroom instruction and management; student learning; child abduction prevention; alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention; safety instruction; fire and arson prevention; child abuse identification and reporting); and Dignity for All Students Act (DASA). Method of Evaluation: In-school teaching requirements, formal lesson planning, observations, the completion of the EC Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA), and graded on a Pass-Fail basis. Observations, Formative and Summative Evaluations, EC Teacher Performance Assessment (TPA), and Formal lesson plans.
Prerequisite(s): For students enrolled in the M.S.Ed. Special Education program.
