EDU 5385 - Practicum in Special Education (7-12)


credits: 1.5
STUDENTS MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION. This practicum course is designed for students enrolled in the M.S.Ed. Special Education program. The second of two required practica, this course is focused on the practical application of curriculum design and instruction within a secondary (7-12) special education classroom. Objectives: A) Create learning experiences that engage diverse learners in critical thinking and creativity; B) Design and implement learning activities aligned with New York State’s Next Generation Learning Standards specific to the grade level experience; C) Administer formative and summative assessments to understand students’ progress toward the standard or learning outcome and utilize the data to make instructional decisions; D) Engage in reflective analysis to improve instructional planning and practice. Placements are secured by Elmira College’s Department of Teacher Education. Method of Evaluation: Graded on Pass-Fail basis. Students will be observed by an Elmira College Practicum supervisor throughout the term and will be evaluated at the end of the term by their host teacher.  Completion of an attendance log (50 hours), Weekly Reflections, Formative and Summative Assessments, and Practicum Evaluation Rubric (by host teacher and supervisor).

Prerequisite(s): For students enrolled in the M.S.Ed. Special Education program.
