RDG 5300 - Adolescent Literacy Through a Developmental Lens credits: 3.0 Will examine research-based literacy instruction for middle and high school level students. Developmental aspects of adolescent learners will be examined to provide a framework for understanding literacy instruction across the content areas. Emerging technologies will be examined and applied to literacy learning. Objectives: A) Describe the developmental and diverse needs of middle and high school literacy learners; B) Demonstrate research based instructional strategies for effectively teaching reading and writing for middle and high school students across content areas; C) Evaluate current research and practice in the field of adolescent literacy; D) Examine emerging technologies and their application to literacy learning; E) Analyze models for literacy leadership and coaching within middle and high school settings. Method of Instruction: Classroom lecture, discussion, and demonstrations. Method of Evaluation: Midterm, final exam, research paper, and demonstration of strategies.
Prerequisite(s): Admission into the MSE: Education (General Education or Literacy). Co-Requisite(s): with EDU 5123 or EDU 5132 or EDU 5142 .
