HIS 5235 - Twentieth Century America credits: 3.0 This course will examine the structures and ideas that have help America together or divided it, who controlled power, and how power was made accessible or inaccessible to the average citizen. Study and discussion will begin with the Progressive era and move on to consider American imperialism, World War I, immigration, big business, labor, the Twenties, the Great Depression and the coming of the New Deal, World War II, postwar America, the sixties, Vietnam, Watergate, and contemporary America. The cyclical pattern of reform and retrenchment will offer the student an opportunity to question and debate American domestic policies.
