EDU 5550 - Creating Safe And Inclusive Learning Environments


credits: 3.0
This course is a graduate level course.Designed to help participants in constructing classroom environments that will meet the needs of all children, including those with developmental differences. Students examine the elements of teachers’ day-to-day responsibilities with regard to student behavior, classroom environment, inclusivity and the impacts that those elements have on student learning. Major topics include social and emotional learning, childhood trauma, and behavior assessments. Time is spent on the development and use of strategies to support inclusivity and active learning opportunities. Objectives: A) Identify diversities in students and behavior; B) Explain the educational rights and legal foundations of behavior management in our society, including but not limited to provisions under Every Student Succeeds Act and the Dignity for All Students Act; C) Develop a philosophy of classroom management including the interplay of curricula, classroom expectations, routines and procedures; D) Discuss and critique shifts in classroom management techniques using educational and psychological theories of learning; E) Conduct a functional behavior assessment and use it to develop a behavior intervention plan for implementation on a student’s individualized education plan (IEP); F) Develop a repertoire of positive behavioral practices and strategies to support diverse student populations in inclusive classroom environments. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, case studies, role-playing, presentations, and group work. Method of Evaluation: Discussion, Case Studies/Role-playing, Develop a written Classroom Management Philosophy, Functional Behavior Assessment, and Behavior Intervention Plan Project.
