EDU 5400 - Student Teaching


credits: 12.0
Student Teaching is the capstone course for graduate level students seeking teaching certification in the state of New York. During this course, pre-service teachers demonstrate their teaching knowledge, dispositions, and performances as they assume a substantial instructional load and are given the responsibility to design, implement, and assess a wide range of learning experiences that are aligned with New York State Learning Standards. Whenever possible, pre-service teachers are placed in schools where they have the opportunity to work with diverse populations with varying developmental levels and identified special needs. Additionally, pre-service teachers attend seminars and workshops at Elmira College to discuss topics such as classroom instruction and management; student learning; child abduction prevention; alcohol, tobacco, and other drug abuse prevention; safety instruction; fire and arson prevention; child abuse identification and reporting); and Dignity for All Students Act (DASA). Objectives: See Syllabus for Objectives and Outcomes. Method of Instruction: Lectures, Discussions, Readings, Demonstrations, and Modeling. Method of Evaluation: In-school teaching requirements, pre-service teachers complete lesson plans, observations, and e-portfolio/personal website, and graded on a Pass-Fail basis.
