EDU 5202 - Practicum In Teaching Secondary Biology II credits: 3.0 STUDENTS MUST PROVIDE THEIR OWN TRANSPORTATION. Designed to facilitate candidates enrolled in the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program’s practical application of curriculum design and implementation within a secondary biology classroom. Is a continuation of EDU 5102 - Practicum In Teaching Secondary Biology I with an emphasis on scientific communication and writing. Course has both a seminar component and a field-based practicum component. Objectives: A) Create learning experiences that engage learners in critical thinking and creativity; B) Design and implement learning activities aligned with New York State’s Next Generation Science/Biology Standards and the National Science Teachers Association; C) Engage in reflective analysis to improve instructional planning and practice; D) Conduct demonstrations and hands-on activities relevant to the biology curriculum; E)Design laboratory experiments to test a hypothesis; F) Create explanatory and analytical reports that effectively communicate scientific processes and claims. Method of Instruction: Lectures, Discussions, Readings, Demonstrations, and Modeling. Method of Evaluation: Two formative assessments of teaching; Two biology learning segments (three to five lesson plans each); Participation in collaborative peer review sessions of learning segments; Collaborative Peer Review Report; Explanatory and Analytical report that demonstrates the ability to effectively communicate scientific processes and claims; and Presentation of three designed labs.
