EDU 5112 - Practicum In Teaching Secondary Mathematics I


credits: 3.0
Designed to facilitate candidates enrolled in the Masters of Arts in Teaching (MAT) program’s practical application of curriculum design and implementation within a secondary mathematics classroom. The emphasis of this course is the implementation of hands-on discovery learning. This course has both a seminar component and a field-based practicum component. Objectives: A) Create learning experiences that engage learners in critical thinking and creativity; B) Design and implement learning activities aligned with New York State Mathematics Learning Standards and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) Standards; C) Engage in reflective analysis to improve instructional planning and practice; D) Create discovery activities using manipulatives or technology that develop topics discussed in the classroom; E) Develop and implement learning mathematics learning segments that emphasize discovery learning strategies; F) Conduct demonstrations and in-class activities relevant to the mathematics curriculum. Method of Instruction: Lectures, Discussions, Readings, Demonstrations, and Modeling. Method of Evaluation: Two formative assessments of teaching-200 pts; Two Mathematics learning segments-200 pts; Development and presentation of a discovery activity -100 pts; Collaborative peer review sessions of learning segments-100 pts; and Presentation of mathematics learning segment in seminar-100 pts.
