MCD 1895 - INTRODUCTION TO FILMMAKING credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: FAR 1895 This course is a basic introduction to the creative power of film and visual storytelling. With an emphasis on narrative filmmaking, students will study the major facets and roles of creating a short film, such as: screenwriting, directing, producing, cinematography, and editing. This course is a lecture workshop introducing the creative power of film and visual storytelling. With an emphasis on narrative filmmaking, students will study the major facets and roles of creating a short film such as: screenwriting, directing, producing, cinematography, and editing. In a process similar to the development of a feature film, the course’s lectures, group labs, and workshops will present a chronological introduction to the development, production, and post-production of a short film. Assignments, working in tandem with the course’s lectures and labs, will further student’s understanding of cinematic storytelling by focusing on creativity, visualization, film vocabulary, and learning the aesthetic principles necessary to create a captivating short film. Smartphones with video recording capabilities are a requirement for this course. Objectives: A) Identify and describe the fundamental aspects of filmmaking; B) Channel current and future ideas into the cinematic medium; C) Develop knowledge of basic film vocabulary and the process of film production; D) Expose students to compelling, well-executed short films to inspire current and future work in filmmaking; E) Introduce students to the operation and use of select basic filmmaking equipment and programs as it pertains to the course and its assignments; F) Foster the collaborative sense of the filmmaking process.
