PSY 4999 - INTERNSHIP IN PSYCHOLOGY

This is a credit variable course for 3.0 OR 6.0 credits. This internship is for students interested in working in any field related to psychology. The internship may include supporting counselors, teachers, or human service professionals as they work with clients or related personnel; development of programs and initiatives per organizational needs; data collection and analysis; or anything similarly related to a career in psychology. All internships are required to take place at an off-campus site and must be approved by the faculty sponsor prior to the start. Students will contract additional course requirements with the sponsoring faculty member. The internship can be taken for 3 credits (120 hours) or for 6 credits (240 hours). Students will work with Career Services to be placed into an appropriate internship in a subfield of psychology. Students will then contract a faculty member to mutually choose a final learning paper, research product, etc. Career Services will do the institutional supervision of the student, while the faculty member will evaluate the final product and assign a grade for the internship. Objectives: A) Students will successfully apply disciplinary knowledge in a setting appropriate to the field of psychology; B) Students and sponsoring faculty members will develop at least one additional course-specific learning outcome for the internship. The student will be evaluated by the faculty member on the basis of the learning outcomes. Method of Instruction: This is an internship. Method of Evaluation: Final grades will use the S-D-F grading scheme. “S” will be assigned to internships meeting the required hours AND satisfactory completion of the final product. The faculty member will assess the final product that was mutually agreed upon with the student. No student can pass the internship without completing the minimum number of hours for a 3 credit or 6 credit internship. “D” will be assigned to internships meeting the required hours AND less than satisfactory completion of the final product. “F” will be assigned for internships wherein the hours have not been met OR a final product is not submitted. Prerequisite(s): Junior or Senior Standing and Instructor’s Signature Required. Also need to complete a contract with the Office of Career Services, before registering for course.
