NSG 1967 - GLOBAL HUMANITARIAN ISSUES credits: 3.0 Crosslisted/Same As: HMS 1967 HMS 1967 -NSG 1967. Will explore humanitarian aid in the context of disaster response and on-going conflict. Based on guidelines established by international responders, we will explore the consequences of mass population displacement and the potential difficulties, among them, epidemics, starvation, and disrupted education. Legal and ethical issues including international law as it applies to humanitarianism will be discussed and well as organizations available to provide aide. Objectives: A) Explain the concept of human dignity and the role of bystanders; B) Describe the role of the humanitarian worker in today’s world; C) Explain ethical issues that humanitarian workers face during the course of their work; D) Describe humanitarian interventions during natural, manmade and conflict situations; E) Explain the potential for humanitarian aid to be used as a weapon; F) Describe the process of creating and running a refugee camp; G) Identify ethical dilemmas surrounding refugee camps; H) Explain the relationship between Humanitarian Issues and International Laws. Method of Instruction: Lecture with extensive class discussion. Method of Evaluation: Weekly reaction journal (30%), class discussion (10%), Issue Paper (30%), Refugee Camp project (30%). Meets *GLP Distribution Requirement.
