NSC 1959 - ALASKA:WILDLIFE ECOLOGY & CONSERVAT

John Muir is credited with having introduced the world to Alaskan territory and wildlife. His work was largely the result of journeys he took through Alaska. We will be studying the ecology and conservation of the Alaskan territory. Our focus will be on the flora and fauna of the Kenai Peninsula. This will occur both on campus for the first week and in Alaska for two weeks. Upon returning to campus students will present their chosen research projects. Students will also have the opportunity to experience Alaskan culture and society. Objectives: A) Explain the value of wildlife ecology as a foundation for conservation and critique it in light of modern scientific inquiry; B) Describe the natural history of Alaska and its waterways and inlets; C) Identify and explain the main tenets of conservation and ecology; D) Describe in detail one or more of the animal species found in Alaska; E) Initiate small-scale field observation on an animal species; F) Apply the scientific method in designing and implementing programs in conservation and ecology; G) Present the results of research findings in a professional manner. Method of Instruction: Classroom lecture-discussions-media presentations; Lab and field experimentation and observation; Travel; Journal Entries. Method of Evaluation: The course grade will be determined by both your lecture and your lab grade. The lecture grade will contribute 75% and the lab grade will contribute 25% toward your course grade; Attendance 150 pts, Blog Page 150 pts, Project Notes 300 pts, Project Presentation 300 pts. TRAVEL COURSE, FEES ASSOCIATED.
