MAT 3999 - RESEARCH IN MATHEMATICS credits: 0.0 This is a credit variable course for zero credits or 1.0 credit. This course will provide students an experience in conducting mathematical research. Students and the instructor will select a topic of mutual interest. Will include regular discussions and collaboration with the instructor on all aspects of the research process. In particular, will involve conducting extensive background research and synthesizing information from multiple sources, will incorporate discussions of expository and technical writing (where technology such as the LaTeX typesetting software is used), and will culminate in the creation of a final product (e.g. a research paper, a poster, etc.) and a public presentation at an appropriate academic conference (e.g. the Elmira College Student Research Conference or an MAA section meeting). Objectives: A) Collect, interpret, and synthesize information from multiple mathematical sources to determine the background necessary for the project; B) Present research findings in written form (paper or poster) using standard mathematical notation and conventions; C) Present research findings orally at an academic conference using standard mathematical terminology. Method of Instruction: Regular discussions and collaboration with the instructor on all aspects of the research process. Method of Evaluation: Discussion with instructors (50%) and final product (50%).
Prerequisite(s): INSTRUCTOR’S SIGNATURE REQUIRED.
