MAT 2009 - MATHEMATICAL HISTORY: RENAISSANCE TO MODERN


credits: 3.0
This course will consist of an historical survey of key developments in the history of mathematics since 1500 A.D., and of the application of many of those developments to aspects of human civilization. Mathematical techniques that are suitably elementary will be developed and used in class, so that students may gain a feeling for how mathematical abstractions relate to the real world. Areas of application may include astronomy, biology, music, physics, social sciences, and the visual arts. Method of Instruction: Lecture-discussion, group problem-solving. Method of Evaluation: Exams and a comprehensive final examination, and a paper of modest length.

Prerequisite(s): ADEQUATE SCORE ON PLACEMENT TEST and either MAT 1030 - COLLEGE ALGEBRA  (or) MAT 1091 - PRE-CALCULUS I  (or) MAT 1092 - PRE-CALCULUS II  (or) MAT 1930 - IMMERSION COLLEGE ALGEBRA  (or) MAT 2010 - CALCULUS I  (or) MAT 2020 - CALCULUS II
