FIN 4100 - PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT

This course covers the management of investment portfolios from the professional practitioner’s perspective. Students gain an understanding of the portfolio management process, an integrated set of steps undertaken in a consistent manner to create and maintain an appropriate asset allocation to meet individual or institutional clients’ written goals. The process includes establishing investment objectives and policies, setting appropriate capital market expectations, creating strategic and-or tactical asset allocations, constructing a portfolio, monitoring and evaluating a portfolio compared to the written goals and examining feedback or suggested changes to ensure that they represent long-run considerations. Objectives: A) Describe the portfolio management process; B) Write investment policy statements; C) Develop appropriate portfolios for individual and institutional clients; D) Formulate capital market expectations; E) Set strategic and tactical asset allocations; F) Manage fixed income and equity portfolios; G) Select and monitor portfolio managers; H) Measure risk and apply a risk management process; I) Execute appropriate portfolio management decisions; J) Effectively monitor and reallocate assets; K) Evaluate portfolio performance and explain investment performance standards. Method of Instruction: Lecture, Demonstration, Collaboration (in class interaction with peers and instructor). Method of Evaluation: Quizzes 20%; Mid-Term Exam 20%; Final Exam 20%; Portfolio Projects 20%; Class Attendance and Participation 20%. Class attendance and active participation are equally included in the grade weighting.
