EDU 5325 - Critical Issues In (Dis)Ability And Special Education


credits: 3.0
This is a Masters level course.This course examines the core understandings related to teaching diverse populations of students, including those with various disabilities. Content includes, the social construction of disability and special education, major legislation and litigation, shifting notions in special and inclusive education, the nature and characteristics of various disabilities, and a thorough exploration of services and programs that can be implemented to help meet the educational, social and emotional needs of students. In this course, students will also explore the legalities of individualized education plans and 504 plans as well as components necessary for effective collaboration with parents, school personnel and other professionals. Objectives: A) Define issues surrounding social construction of disability and its relation to special and inclusive education; B) Analyze major legislation and litigation that impact general, special and inclusive education; C) Define the nature, characteristics and prevalence of the categories of disability under IDEA law; D) Identify various services and programs available to support equitable educational experiences for diverse student populations; E) Identify, define and explain the purpose of individualized education plans (IEPs) and 504 plans; F) Analyze the various types of collaboration and their impact on student success; G) Create two differentiated lessons for academically diverse students (one with a low-incidence disability and one with a high-incidence disability). Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion. Method of Evaluation: Discussion (20%), Case Studies (30%), Weekly Reflections (30%); (2) Differentiating Instruction projects (for a Student with a low-incidence disability and a student with a high-incidence disability) (20%).
