AMS 2130H-ARH 2130H-HIS 2130H Full Title: AMERICAN ART: 1865-1965. Will explore the cultural, social and political history of American art from the end of the Civil War through what the critic Arthur Danto has called the end of art represented by Andy Warhol’s Brillo Boxes of 1965. Topics include: the tension between internationalism and nationalism in the years after the Civil War; aestheticism and art for art’s sake; the evolution of photography as an artistic medium; the various responses to the emergence of modernism with a particular focus on the Armory Show of 1913; the political and social context of New Deal art; abstract expressionism and pop art of the 1950s and 60s. Objectives: A) Identify and describe major American artists and art works from 1865-1965; B) Identify and explain the significance of the major schools and styles of American art between 1865-1965; C) Interpret individual works of art as expressions of the social, political and cultural history of their time; D) Describe and analyze a variety of critical responses to an individual artist or work of art; E) Describe and analyze a thematic museum exhibit of American art. Method of Instruction: Lecture and discussion. Method of Evaluation: Quizzes and in-class writing; three exams; two papers. Meets *WEP Distribution Requirement.

Prerequisite(s): Must be in the Honors Program or Permission of Instructor.
