LAW 3940 - WRONGFUL CONVICTIONS ACTUALINNOCENCE

As noted by the Innocence Project, conservatively, there are, at any given time, 20,000 inmates in prisons and on death row in the United States who are factually innocent. This course will explore the causes of wrongful convictions, conduct case-studies on exonerees, as well as look require each student to conduct a factual and academic analysis of a case-study or present inmate claiming actual innocence. Objectives: A) Identify, describe, and explain the leading factors of wrongful convictions as applied to the prison population, both historically and presently; B) Conduct and communicate, both orally and in writing, an analysis of available adjudicate facts as applied to real world scenarios; C) Assess and, where merited, advocate both orally and in writing, for a prisoner claiming actual innocence; D) Compare and contrast primary sources to hearsay evidence to physical evidence pertaining to an inmate claiming actual innocence. Method of Instruction: Class discussion of assigned materials supplemented by lectures and presentations. Method of Evaluation: Research Article, Presentations (Oral Advocacy), and Classroom Discussions. Meets *WRT Distribution Requirement.
