ANT 3250-SOC 3250. In this course we examine the social and cultural arrangements of economic systems, with particular attention to the impact of modern global capitalism. We will explore the ways that diverse peoples have organized their economic systems, from small gathering and hunting societies to ancient chiefdoms to modern capitalist countries. We will approach economics as a set of social relationships and suggest how these relationships structure family, community and government. We will pay particular attention to how modern global capitalism frames and shapes the ways that most societies function in the contemporary world. Objectives: A) Describe some of the economic arrangements of different societies; B) Explain the historical evolution of modern-day capitalism; C) Present some of the theoretical analyses and critiques of capitalist political economy; D) Show how production and consumption are linked globally; E) Demonstrate analytical and critical skills through reading, discussion, writing and the design of research projects. Method of Instruction: Lecture, discussion, group projects, analytical projects, and visual media. Method of Evaluation: Two-three short analytical papers (20%), four-five quizzes (25%), one group presentation (15%), and one final paper (20%). Meets *GLP Distribution Requirement.
